Assoc. Prof. Sujata Deo


Granddaughter of Dambar Khalifa—a household name in Saptari and onetime number one wrestler of Nepal—and daughter of Jitendra Narayan Deo, a very popular educationist and social activist, – Sujata Deo has received “National Education Award” from the Government of Nepal. Sujata Deo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Philosophy at Tri-Chandra college, Kathmandu. She recently submitted her Ph. D. dissertation at North Bengal University, India where she spent her last five years. She started her teaching career as a teacher in her village’s school—which was established by her family as a memorial of her uncle—before moving to Janakpur and later to Kathmandu. While at hometown, she actively involved herself to establish SWDEC, a microfinance scheme, to help elevate poverty of the marginalized women of Saptari by providing access to finance. With eleven centers and many staffs, SWDEC is already a success story in the region. She is the Vice President of the Organization, which is now seeking to expand itself into a bank. She is involved with many non-government organizations, both directly and indirectly. She has tirelessly worked for women and been actively involved in abolishing dowry system through ‘Bageshwori Sewa Samiti’. She occasionally writes in journals and newspapers, has hosted several radio shows with various FM stations, and has worked as an actor with Mahasanchar.
