Prof. Dr. Prakash Raj Regmi


Dr. Prakash Raj Regmi is a pioneering Cardiologist who has worked for the expansion and decentralization of Heart Care Services in Nepal. He has been recognized for his works in advocacy and public awareness rising in the field of heart disease prevention and control in Nepal. He completed his MD in Cardiology in 1987 from Kharkov Medical Institute, Ukraine, and did his fellowship training in Interventional Cardiology in 2001 from Saint Anna University hospital, Brno, Czech Republic and Saint George Teaching hospital, London, UK. He is also the Fellow of American College of Cardiology. He is a Senior Consultant Cardiologist under the Ministry of Health and also the Professor of Cardiology at the National Academy of Medical Sciences, Bir Hospital, Nepal His field of interest is preventive medicine, and he has put tremendous efforts in advocacy, awareness and training activities in Rheumatic Heart Diseases’ (RHD) and Non Communicable Diseases’ (NCDs) prevention and control. He is the Founder President of Nepal NCD Alliance. He served as the National President of Nepal Heart Foundation for several years. He is the Executive Director of the Nepal Rheumatic Heart Disease Control program which is a joint program of the Government of Nepal and the Nepal Heart Foundation. He has also served as the Chairman of the Nepal Heart Network (a network of 19 heart- and NCDs related NGOs). He works closely with the Ministry of Health of Nepal and is involved in several NCDs related activities starting from National NCDs Risk Factors survey to drafting of Nepal NCDs action plan. He has authored several books, and published articles on RHD and NCDs both in national and international journals. He has been an invited speaker to several international cardiology conferences and meetings. He has also served as the Organizing Chairman of several seminars and workshops on RHD and NCDs at National level. Dr. Regmi is a social activist, actively involved in social service through Rotary Club of Patan and Nepal Heart Foundation. He travels extensively throughout Nepal visiting village schools and performs heart screening of school children for early detection and treatment of rheumatic and congenital heart defects. For this purpose he has worked as team leader with several international partners such as World Heart Federation, Australian Aid, Medtronic Philanthropy, Edwards Life Science Foundation and Rotary International. Self-satisfaction in Caring for the underserved and underprivileged has been the driving force behind the active social engagement of Dr. Regmi.
